Check Shopify and QuickBooks SKUs before changing a catalog sync

A short, source-linked review for merchants or bookkeepers connecting, repairing, or switching product tracking between the two catalogs.

Who may find this useful: a store that already has product items in both systems and is about to enable or change a connector. This is an educational checklist, not evidence that every Shopify merchant has this problem.

What the connector already does

Intuit’s Shopify connector says Product Tracking attempts to match items by SKU and name to avoid duplicates. Close matches can appear for review; when no match is found, the item may need to be created manually. Intuit also documents product matching when connecting another sales channel. So a separate checker only adds value if it helps someone spot ambiguous rows before that setup or review.

Review these cases before a sync change

  1. Blank identifiers: count items without a SKU in either catalog.
  2. Repeated identifiers: investigate duplicate SKUs before treating an identifier as a unique match.
  3. Exact matches: compare the SKU fields as text, preserving leading zeroes and punctuation.
  4. Name-only candidates: treat names as a prompt for a person to review, not proof that two records are the same item.
  5. Variants and special item types: check these separately with the connector owner or bookkeeper.

Use dated copies of the product exports and leave source files unchanged. Do not use an SKU-only check to make decisions about quantity, tax, price, or accounting treatment.

When a standalone preflight may not be needed

If your connector already provides reliable review and matching for your catalog, or you have only a few simple items, its built-in workflow or a spreadsheet may be enough. The practical question is whether a separate pre-sync comparison catches a case your current process misses.

Shopify warns that spreadsheet sorting can affect product variants and image relationships. Keep the original export untouched and do not re-import a modified copy as part of this review. See Shopify’s product export guidance.

Try the browser or offline comparison

The free browser evaluation or offline copy compares two selected catalog CSVs locally and creates a review file. It does not connect to Shopify or QuickBooks, upload files, modify records, or guarantee connector compatibility.
